Trained at the Juilliard School of Music, Jillian Laurain’s teaching combines aspects of the bel canto technique with modern voice practices. She applies classical techniques to many genres including: musical theater, jazz, and pop idioms. The foundation of her teaching is rooted in the relaxed and supported breath, incorporating the engaging of the lower abdominals, diaphragm, and intercostals muscles. This helps maintain a grounded sensation in the voice. Ms. Laurain stresses proper diction through vowel modification and consonant placement.
Her expertise is not limited to only vocal technique; she has over 25 years of professional experience in the opera, cabaret, and theater worlds to impart. Her teaching emphasizes elements of presentation, song interpretation, and musicianship skills.
She believes with commitment on the part of both teacher and student, the natural singing voice can be developed in nearly anyone. Ms. Laurain has a noted reputation as one of the foremost voice teachers in Manhattan. She has had great success in the rehabilitation of damaged and abused voices. In addition, many of her students have gone on to achieve thriving careers in the performing arts both in the United States and internationally.
